Wayne University is a public research university located in Detroit, Michigan, USA.
Founded in 1868, the university comprises 13 schools and colleges offering approximately 375 degree programs. Wayne University is the third-largest university in Michigan, with nearly 24,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate studies. Together with the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, Wayne University forms the Michigan University Research Corridor.
The main campus covers 203 acres and includes more than 100 academic and research buildings. The university also has three satellite campuses in Macomb and Wayne counties. The university's sports team, the Wayne Warriors, competes in NCAA Division II in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
History
Wayne University was established in 1868 as the Detroit Medical College, later expanding into various fields of education, including pedagogy, pharmacy, and law. In 1934, the institution officially became Wayne University, consolidating several colleges. Subsequently, the university added schools of social work, business administration, and the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. In the 21st century, WSU opened the Center for Interdisciplinary Bioscience Research for interdisciplinary studies.
Organization and Administration
The university is governed by the Board of Governors, composed of eight members elected by Michigan voters for an eight-year term. Board members serve without compensation. The board elects the university president. Student government is led by the Student Senate. Some university colleges have their own student senates that report to the main student senate.

Wayne University's academic programs are distributed across 13 schools and colleges: Mike Ilitch School of Business, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Arts, Performing Arts, and Communications, Graduate School, Law School, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Information Sciences, School of Medicine, College of Nursing, Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Irvin D. Reid Honors College, and School of Social Work.
Wayne University offers approximately 375 undergraduate, graduate, professional, and certificate programs. As of September 2024, the university's enrollment was 23,964 students, including 3,949 freshmen.
