The Summit County Historical Society (SCHS) was founded in 1924 with the goal of preserving and interpreting the rich history of Summit County and the city of Akron. As a non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status, the Society plays an essential role in educating regional communities about the people and events that have shaped local heritage. Among the significant sites managed by the society are the Perkins Stone Mansion, the John Brown House, and the Old Stone Schoolhouse, the latter of which is the result of a collaboration with Akron Public Schools.
In 1929, the Society acquired its first property — the Old Stone Schoolhouse, donated by the city of Akron and dating back to 1840. Over the years, the Society significantly expanded its capabilities, attracting about 2000 members.
In 1943, the Summit County Historical Society was bequeathed the John Brown House, the former residence of the famous abolitionist, along with funding for its maintenance. In 1945, the Perkins Stone Mansion was purchased, further cementing the Society’s commitment to preserving historic landmarks. Today, these two sites are open to visitors, offering guided tours, educational programs, and special events that foster community involvement in learning about its history.
One of the Society’s proud traditions is its annual summer demonstrations of pastoral arts, recreating historic agricultural practices. The time capsule buried at the Perkins Stone Mansion in 1950 was opened in 2000, revealing valuable documents and artifacts highlighting local history.
SCHS also actively promotes educational initiatives. The restoration of the Old Stone Schoolhouse in 1967 laid the foundation for organizing school visits and special events that strengthen students’ connection to their heritage. The Society offers "Discoveries Tricks," covering topics such as World War I, the Ohio Canal, and African American history. The "Remember When..." programs are designed for senior citizens, libraries, and schools, addressing topics from the Victorian era to Christmas traditions.
Furthermore, the Society maintains a large collection of artifacts reflecting everyday life and culture in Akron and Summit County. This collection, along with archives stored in the Special Collections Department of the Akron-Summit County Public Library, serves as vital resources for researchers and historians.
Today, the Summit County Historical Society continues its activities through member contributions, donations, and grants. As an active participant in the Ohio Local History Alliance and the American Association for State and Local History, the Society remains dedicated to its mission of preserving the past and fostering the appreciation of history within the community. Through various programs and initiatives, SCHS ensures that the rich history of Summit County remains accessible and engaging for future generations.
