Reading Terminal Market: the heart of Philadelphia's gastronomic culture
90

Reading Terminal Market is the heart of Philadelphia’s culinary scene and one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the United States. Founded in 1893, the market is located in the very center of the city, in a historic building that was once part of the Reading Railroad station complex.

The history of Reading Terminal begins with the construction of Reading Terminal — a station that became an important transportation hub in the 19th century. During its creation, there was a need to relocate street markets into an enclosed space. As a result, a market appeared in the station’s basement, which quickly became popular due to its accessibility and a wide variety of goods.

Over more than a century, the market has undergone changes: from the Great Depression era to the renovation in the 1980s, when it was restored and adapted to modern needs. Today, Reading Terminal Market is a favorite place for both locals and tourists.

Spanning over 5000 square meters, it houses more than 80 vendors. You can find everything here: fresh vegetables and fruits, meat, fish, baked goods, spices, and ready-made meals. Reading Terminal is renowned for its ethnic diversity: representatives of different cultures offer cuisines from their countries, including Italian, Chinese, Indian, Mexican, Greek, and many others.

A special mention goes to the Amish cuisine, which brings fresh products from their farms: homemade milk, cheese, pies, sausages, and canned vegetables. Their products embody tradition and naturalness.

Popular spots at the market

  1. DiNic’s Roast Pork and Beef — this kiosk is famous for its sandwiches with roasted pork, which have repeatedly been recognized as the best in the country.
  2. Beiler’s Donuts — a must-visit for sweet lovers. Fresh donuts with various fillings are always in high demand.
  3. Miller’s Twist — the perfect place for those who want to taste traditional Amish soft pretzels.
  4. Hershel’s East Side Deli — a great spot to enjoy classic Jewish delicacies such as pastrami sandwiches.
  5. The Pennsylvania General Store — a souvenir shop where you can buy the famous "Gates" chocolates or "Whoopie Pies" cookies.

The market operates daily, except on major holidays. Entry is free, and its convenient location near Philadelphia’s main attractions makes it an ideal place to visit while exploring the city.
