Garfield Community Learning Center, located in Akron, is a public high school that is part of the Akron Public Schools (APS) system. The school's mascot is the "Golden Rams," and its school colors — maroon and gold — symbolize its heritage and spirit. Garfield CLC is also a member of the Akron City Series athletic conference, competing with other high schools in the region.
Heritage of Unified Schools and Community Strength
Garfield CLC was established in 2017 as a result of the merger of two historic schools in Akron — Garfield High School and Kenmore High School. This decision was made due to declining student enrollment and financial considerations. Initially, the new school was housed in the building of the former Kenmore High School, while the original Garfield High School building was demolished. However, the rich history and traditions of both schools have been preserved and continue to live on.
In 2022, Garfield CLC opened its doors in a new modern building, which became part of Akron Public Schools’ renovation and construction program valued at $800 million, ongoing since 2002. The new 25,500-square-meter building can accommodate approximately 1,400 students and offers modern facilities for learning and extracurricular activities. The name Garfield Community Learning Center was chosen to honor the heritage of Garfield while maintaining the connection of the Kenmore name to the community.
Sports Tradition
The sports teams of Garfield CLC, known as the "Golden Rams," proudly continue the athletic tradition initiated by the original Garfield High School. With maroon and gold colors, the teams compete in the Akron City Series, strengthening school pride and athletic excellence. Thanks to its rich history, modern facilities, and sporting achievements, Garfield Community Learning Center remains a key educational institution in the Akron community, shaping the future of its students while preserving the legacy of the past.
