Today, the university is part of the Ohio University System, has over 120,000 alumni, and offers more than 200 academic programs across eight colleges. CSU is classified as an institution with a high level of research activity (category R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity).

History

Education in Cleveland began to actively develop in 1870 when a local YMCA branch started offering free courses. By 1921, this educational program had grown so much that it separated from the YMCA and became known as the Cleveland YMCA School of Technology. Two years later, the school first began offering bachelor's degree courses, which is considered the founding date of Fenn College, although the college was officially renamed only in 1929. In 1964, the State of Ohio acquired the entire campus of Fenn College, located in downtown Cleveland, and established a new educational institution aimed at local residents, which was named Cleveland State University. The first chairman of the Board of Trustees was the renowned industrialist James J. Nenses. Over the next decades, the university grew rapidly, and by 1997, the number of students exceeded 15,000, although only 600 of them lived in university housing.

Academic Programs

CSU offers a wide range of disciplines and research opportunities, including 70 undergraduate majors, 27 master's programs, two post-master's programs, six doctoral degrees, and two law degrees.

Student Life and Sports

The university is known for its student media, including the radio station 89.3 WCSB, the independent student newspaper The Cauldron, and other publications. Additionally, CSU has 17 sports teams called the "Vikings" that compete in various leagues, including the Horizon League. Cleveland State University is an important educational and cultural center that continues to develop and plays a significant role in the life of Cleveland and its surroundings.
