From Fire to Rebirth: How the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Became the Heart of the Italian Community!

Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel — is a historic Catholic church in the city of Youngstown. The basilica was constructed in 1913 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 under the name Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is an important symbol of Italian-American heritage. Founded in the early 20th century by Italian immigrants and their pastor Father Emanuel Stabile, the church became a place of realization of this community’s dreams. Construction of the church began in 1908, and parishioners temporarily worshiped in other local churches until the underground level of the church, which served as a temporary sanctuary, was completed. The final construction was finished in 1916, and the church became a true symbol of the Catholic faith and spirituality. Although a fire in 1923 caused significant damage to the church, the parishioners united to restore it. In 1923, the renovated church was reconsecrated. Over the years, the church continued to grow and develop under the leadership of various pastors. Notably, under Father Henry Fabrizio’s guidance in the 1960s, a new residence, a large social hall, and the Saint Anthony’s Garden were built.

In 1986, Monsignor Michael J. Carillo became the church’s rector, continuing the restoration of the church and the development of the parish community. Thanks to his efforts, a bell tower with an elevator was built and a religious education center was established. In 2001, a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was installed, now towering over the city of Youngstown. Today, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel remains an important spiritual center for the 1175 families living in this parish, and stands as a bright testament to the dedication of its parishioners and pastors.
