Driver crashes into K9 unit car, hits a house, and leaves the scene

CLEVELAND - Residents of the Old Brooklyn neighborhood in Cleveland are seeking answers after a pedestrian hit resulted in damage to a police patrol car and a significant police presence near their homes.

This happened in the 4400 block on Behrwald Avenue around 6:30 PM.

The police have not been able to provide details about what exactly happened, but when we spoke with neighbors, they told us they did not understand what was going on.

"Our neighborhood has been quiet and peaceful for many years," said Fred Hodges.

On Tuesday, Cleveland police provided an update that an unknown vehicle struck a Cleveland police K-9 unit car, drove into a house, and then fled the scene. No injuries were reported as a result of the accident. The police are currently searching for the driver and their vehicle.

Fred Hodges has lived at the corner of West 45th Street and Behrwald Road in the Old Brooklyn area of Cleveland for 16 years.

According to him, the silence to which he was accustomed on his street was broken after he left his house Monday evening and saw a damaged sheriff’s deputy truck along with a dozen special forces and police officers just a few steps from his door.

"We don't like to see things like this. It’s concerning," Hodges said.

Over the past three weeks, Hodges said, several unusual events have occurred in his neighborhood, starting with the incident on Monday evening and ending with the injury of a 10-year-old child at 5100 Gifford Avenue, which News 5 reported last month.

Despite the circumstances, Hodges said he feels safe and hopes that everything will soon return to normal.

"We don’t know what may be waiting for us in the future. I hope this is the last such incident in our neighborhood," Hodges said.

Neighbors encourage the community to attend their safety meetings.

The first of these took place on Tuesday, March 12, at 6:00 PM at the Second District Police Committee meeting at: Bridge CLE, 3389 Fulton Road.

Hodges invites people to join the safety meeting in Old Brooklyn at St. James Church next Monday at 7:00 PM.
