On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, a forest fire broke out in Ocean County, New Jersey, covering over 15,000 acres of land. According to authorities, the fire was caused by the careless handling of fire by 19-year-old Joseph Kling from Weyertown. He has been charged with arson and attempted arson under aggravating circumstances.
The fire, known as "Jones Road Wildfire", started in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area and quickly spread to neighboring areas, including the towns of Lacey and Barnegat. Approximately 5,000 people were evacuated, one commercial building was destroyed, and several vehicles were damaged.

As of April 30, the fire was 75% contained, but firefighters continue to fight the blaze, which is hampered by strong winds and dry conditions.
The investigation revealed that Kling ignited a fire with wooden pallets and left it unattended, leading to the large-scale wildfire. Using GPS technology, investigators were able to determine the exact start point of the fire and identify the suspect.
This fire is the largest in New Jersey since 2007, when a blaze destroyed over 17,000 acres of land.
Kling is in custody awaiting trial. If found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
This incident underscores the importance of careful handling of fire, especially under conditions of increased fire danger.
