On Friday evening in the South Ozone Park neighborhood, Queens, a serious traffic accident occurred, resulting in at least nine people injured. The incident took place around 7:00 PM at the intersection of Liberty Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard.
According to police, a 79-year-old woman driving a Ford Explorer was making a left turn from Liberty Avenue onto Lefferts Boulevard. To avoid a collision with a parked Q10 bus, she drove onto the sidewalk, where she collided with the side of the bus and a bus stop.
Among the injured are four pedestrians waiting at the stop: an 18-year-old girl, two women aged 66, and a 70-year-old woman. Two bus passengers, men aged 34 and 38, were also injured. Additionally, three individuals in the Ford Explorer — the 79-year-old driver, a 78-year-old woman, and a 69-year-old woman — sustained injuries. All victims were transported to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition.
The police note that none of the injured sustained life-threatening injuries. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident is ongoing.
This incident was the second pedestrian hit in Queens on the same day. Earlier, around 5:30 PM in Astoria, a 35-year-old woman driving a Nissan Versa lost control of the vehicle and drove onto the sidewalk, hitting two girls aged 7 and 14, as well as a 58-year-old man. The driver was arrested at the scene and charged with reckless driving and driving without a license.
Local residents express concerns about road safety and call for additional measures to protect pedestrians.
